The Giver is a dystopian young adult novel set in a seemingly perfect society where pain, conflict, and choice have been eliminated through strict control and sameness. The story follows Jonas, a twelve-year-old boy who is selected to become the community’s Receiver of Memory, the only person allowed to hold memories of the past. As Jonas receives memories of color, love, joy, and suffering from the Giver, he begins to realize the cost of his society’s “perfection.” Confronted with difficult truths about freedom, emotion, and humanity, Jonas must decide whether obedience is worth the loss of real life and meaningful choice.
