Wizard of Oz Featured Cast & Movement Auditions

Featured cast and movement auditions are for students who have already signed up to participate in The Wizard of Oz. If chosen for a featured role, an additional $50 will be due. There is no additional charge if chosen for movement ensemble.

For auditions, please prepare 16-32 bars (about 30-60 seconds) of a musical theatre song that best showcases your singing ability. Please DO NOT sing anything from Wizard of Oz. Students should bring an instrumental/karaoke version of their song on a phone to be plugged into our sound system. Please DO NOT sing with background vocals.

Students should also prepare a 30-60 second monologue that best showcases their acting ability. Please DO NOT use material from Wizard of Oz.

Movement Ensemble

Students auditioning for movement ensemble should review the movement audition videos prior to auditioning. The Scarecrow Audition Dance Combo is strictly for anyone choosing Scarecrow as one of their top choices.

Character Breackdowns

A flex character can be played by any gender.
Roles that are traditionally played by the same actor are noted. Double casting and/or combining roles will be done at the discretion of the directing team.

  • Dorothy (Female) – An innocent young lady with a streak of boldness, outspoken and headstrong, who dearly loves her family, friends, and dog. Dorothy lives on a farm in Kansas with her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry, but she is lonely and dreams of escaping to a wonderful, far-off place.
  • Aunt Em (Female) – A farmer’s wife and Dorothy’s aunt who is firm but also warm and caring. An honest, hard worker, with a strong moral compass. Bakes cookies for the workers, but makes them work while they eat. This role traditionally also plays Glinda.
  • Glinda (Female) – The Good Witch of the North; a maternal figure for the Munchkins and Dorothy, whom she guides through Oz. She is graceful, cheerful, and powerful. This role traditionally also plays Aunt Em.
  • Uncle Henry (Male) – Farmer whose wife, Em, runs things. Adoring uncle to Dorothy. He is kind, fair, and loving. An honest man. This role traditionally also plays Doorman.
  • Doorman** (Flex) – A comical character in the Emerald City who guards the city’s gates. This role traditionally also plays Uncle Henry.
  • Hickory (Flex) – A farmhand. Kind, sweet, and friendly. This role traditionally also plays Tin Man.
  • Tin Man (Male) – Dorothy’s second friend in Oz. Kind, polite, and gentlemanly, he seeks a heart but is already a tender spirit. This role traditionally also plays Hickory.
  • Zeke (Flex) – A farmhand. A big talker, but he is really a softie who frightens easily. This role traditionally also plays Lion.
  • Lion (Flex) – Dorothy’s third friend in Oz. An endearing character with self-esteem issues, he seeks courage but already stands up for his friends and faces his fears. This role traditionally also plays Zeke.
  • Hunk (Flex) – A farmhand. A bit of a know-it-all but also a clumsy, friendly person. This role traditionally also plays Scarecrow.
  • Scarecrow (Flex) – Dorothy’s first friend in Oz. Silly and clumsy, but loyal and caring. He seeks a brain but is already smart and inquisitive. This role traditionally also plays Hunk.
  • Miss Gulch (Female) – A rich, mean woman who lives near Dorothy and her family. She hates Dorothy and Toto. This role traditionally also plays Wicked Witch.
  • Wicked Witch (Female) – Vengeful and mean, the Wicked Witch is ruthless in her attempt to hurt Dorothy and steal her ruby slippers. This role traditionally also plays Miss Gulch.
  • Professor Marvel (Flex) – A lovable con man and fortune teller with a good heart and a jolly sense of humor. He is a crafty showman with an actor’s flair for the dramatic. This role traditionally also plays Oz.
  • Oz (Flex) – A regular man behind a big charade. He uses theatrics to fool people. He is educated, resourceful, and quick-witted. He is a good man, but a bad wizard. This role traditionally also plays Professor Marvel.
  • Toto (Flex) – Played by a person in Oz; Dorothy’s beloved dog. Energetic and expressive.
  • Guard** (Flex) – A comical character in the Emerald City who protects the Great and Powerful Oz.
  • (U) Nikko (Flex) – Leader of the Winged Monkeys
  • Mayor of Munchkinland** (Flex) – Declamatory and pompous.
  • Coroner** (Flex) – Scientific and sure of himself.
  • Barrister** (Flex) – Nit-picky.
  • City Father #1** and #2** (Flex) – Official.
  • Lollipop Guild** (Male) – 2-4 students; Industrial, rough, and tough.
  • Lullaby League** (Female) – 2-4 students; Sweet and serene.
  • Lady in Rocking Chair** (Female) – Someone Dorothy sees in the tornado.
  • Rowboat Person #1** and #2** (Flex) – Someone Dorothy sees in the tornado.
  • Munchkin #1** and #2** (Flex) – The exuberant and childlike inhabitants of Munchkinland. Full of joy, celebration, and wonder at being set free from the Wicked Witch of the East. They are like lively little dolls.
  • Winkie Leader** (Flex) – The head guard at the Wicked Witch’s palace. Stoic, orderly, and dim-witted.
