CHARACTERS

**Double casting will be done at the discretion of the director.
***A flex character can be played by any gender.

Roles required to be at dress/techs: Annie, Warbucks, Grace, Lily, Rooster, and Hannigan.

Annie (Female) – Annie is a complex little girl. She is a tough, streetwise urchin who is nevertheless vulnerable when she thinks she might lose what has become most important to her: a newfound family who loves her. She has to be motherly in scene one, independent in scene two, overwhelmed in scenes four and five, needy in scene seven, and hopeful for the future in scenes ten and eleven. Although she is at times aggressive or crafty, no one can doubt that Annie is a friendly and caring child; she will go to any extent to gain the love of a family to which she can belong.

Miss Hannigan (Female) – The orphanage matron. Hannigan’s distaste for her job and the children that are part of it is obvious in every line she speaks, every song she sings, and every move she makes. Though her ways are ridiculous and cruel, her comedic timing is impeccable.

Grace Farrell (Female) – Grace is the mature, calm, and put-together private secretary to Oliver Warbucks. She is classy and businesslike yet maternal. Grace is ready with an answer for just about everything, and dramatic situations come “under control” the moment she glides into a room.

Oliver Warbucks (Male) – Warbucks is a powerful, self-assured billionaire who always has his mind on business. While sometimes gruff and abrupt, he has a kind heart. At first awkwardly affectionate toward Annie, he soon finds himself completely charmed by her.

Featured Orphans (Female) – Molly (the youngest), Kate (the second youngest), Tessie (the crybaby), July (the quietest), Duffy (the oldest), and Pepper (the toughest). These girls are gritty, neglected, and vulnerable, but honest and lovable. They have mischievous fun with each other and also have “sibling-style” fights.

Rooster Hannigan (Male) – Miss Hannigan’s despicable brother. Rooster is flashy and self-assured. He is sly, deceiving, and smooth as a gambler. Rooster poses as Annie’s father to collect the cash reward offered by Warbucks.

Lily St. Regis (Female) – Lily is Rooster’s airhead girlfriend. She is always distracted, although she manages to pick up on any conversation involving money. Lily poses as Annie’s mother to collect the cash reward offered by Warbucks.

Sandy (Flex) – Sandy is Annie’s canine friend and scrappy in their own right.

Drake (Flex) – The head butler for Warbuck.

Officer Ward (Flex) – A police officer.

Star-to-Be (Female) – She arrives in NYC with dreams to make it big as an actor.

President Roosevelt (Male) – The 32nd President of the United States.

Featured Ensemble (Flex) – Includes Bundles McCloskey, Apple Seller, Dogcatcher, Cecille, Mr/s. Greer, Annette, Man, Usherette, Radio Announcer, Bert Healy, Louis Howe

Annie JR Tech Week Agreement

Please read thoroughly, digitally sign (parent and student), and submit. This is your commitment to the cast and crew stating that you understand that your attendance at Tech Week and all shows is mandatory.

As we gear up for auditions, we wanted to take a moment to discuss what it means to be a part of a show as a busy student and how we try to navigate through these times within the walls of the BBTC.

We LOVE our students to be well-rounded, and we know a majority of our students are multi-passionate individuals. Their interests are varied, and they are high-achieving. We encourage this, and we are proud to support your kiddos in all their endeavors.

Unfortunately, we have noticed a trend within the past several years of students missing rehearsals during “Tech Week." Tech week is the final week of rehearsals before opening night. It is when the technical aspects of the show, such as lighting, sound, set changes, and special effects are incorporated into the performance. Tech week is a crucial time for the cast and crew to work together and ensure that everything runs smoothly and, more importantly, safely. Being present and engaged during tech week is essential to the success of the show, and missing even one rehearsal can result in accidents.

By being present and engaged during these critical times, actors and crew members can help ensure that the show is the best it can be and that everyone involved is safe and can be proud of their hard work and dedication. It shows a commitment to the team, the show, and to oneself as a performer.

How do we reach a happy medium? We start with being realistic. We want your student to be able to do all the things you can do. We also want your student to support and be a productive member of the cast for the show. Only you and your student can decide what that means for your family. If you are a basketball player and know you will have conflicts during some rehearsals, communicate those conflicts with the director as soon as possible. Look at your schedules and see how much conflict you will have and make decisions that only you can make for your family. For example, if your student wants to be Anna, they will have to be at almost every rehearsal. You can choose to go all-in on that or, perhaps, decide that maybe a character that is just as important, but has less stage time, might be the way to go.

Part of our mission at Black Box is "process over product" and, when your student misses rehearsal, they are missing out on the process that helps them learn and grow.

While we are willing to make accommodations and work with your family as much as possible during rehearsals, tech week (and shows) are mandatory. As stated above, your student's attendance during tech week is not only crucial for the success of the show, it is critical to making the production SAFE for everyone involved. If you choose to miss any of Tech Week, the production team and the BBTC reserve the right to use a swing or an understudy to take over the role.

Please take time to think this through and make the decision that puts your student's needs, the needs of this production, and your cast/crew as a priority. The entire rehearsal schedule for this production is already on the Band app, so you have ample time to look through and determine any possible issues. Much thought was put into this schedule, and I have tried to be as considerate as possible with your time.

I am truly so excited about working with each and every one of you. If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to reach out for insight!

Thank you,
