***A flex character can be played by any gender.
Annie (Female) – Annie is a complex little girl. She is a tough, streetwise urchin who is nevertheless vulnerable when she thinks she might lose what has become most important to her: a newfound family who loves her. She has to be motherly in scene one, independent in scene two, overwhelmed in scenes four and five, needy in scene seven, and hopeful for the future in scenes ten and eleven. Although she is at times aggressive or crafty, no one can doubt that Annie is a friendly and caring child; she will go to any extent to gain the love of a family to which she can belong.
Miss Hannigan (Female) – The orphanage matron. Hannigan’s distaste for her job and the children that are part of it is obvious in every line she speaks, every song she sings, and every move she makes. Though her ways are ridiculous and cruel, her comedic timing is impeccable.
Grace Farrell (Female) – Grace is the mature, calm, and put-together private secretary to Oliver Warbucks. She is classy and businesslike yet maternal. Grace is ready with an answer for just about everything, and dramatic situations come “under control” the moment she glides into a room.
Oliver Warbucks (Male) – Warbucks is a powerful, self-assured billionaire who always has his mind on business. While sometimes gruff and abrupt, he has a kind heart. At first awkwardly affectionate toward Annie, he soon finds himself completely charmed by her.
Featured Orphans (Female) – Molly (the youngest), Kate (the second youngest), Tessie (the crybaby), July (the quietest), Duffy (the oldest), and Pepper (the toughest). These girls are gritty, neglected, and vulnerable, but honest and lovable. They have mischievous fun with each other and also have “sibling-style” fights.
Rooster Hannigan (Male) – Miss Hannigan’s despicable brother. Rooster is flashy and self-assured. He is sly, deceiving, and smooth as a gambler. Rooster poses as Annie’s father to collect the cash reward offered by Warbucks.
Lily St. Regis (Female) – Lily is Rooster’s airhead girlfriend. She is always distracted, although she manages to pick up on any conversation involving money. Lily poses as Annie’s mother to collect the cash reward offered by Warbucks.
Sandy (Flex) – Sandy is Annie’s canine friend and scrappy in their own right.
Drake (Flex) – The head butler for Warbuck.
Officer Ward (Flex) – A police officer.
Star-to-Be (Female) – She arrives in NYC with dreams to make it big as an actor.
President Roosevelt (Male) – The 32nd President of the United States.
Featured Ensemble (Flex) – Includes Bundles McCloskey, Apple Seller, Dogcatcher, Cecille, Mr/s. Greer, Annette, Man, Usherette, Radio Announcer, Bert Healy, Louis Howe
